Ian Forgan
In 1995 Ian was awarded a Bachelor of Engineering Degree (in Mechanical and Materials). That year he relocated from Edinburgh to Northampton to embark on an 18 month Graduate Trainee programme with Cosworth Racing. After 3 years in the Production Engineering department he moved to the American Racing Department as a Development Engineer. Ian's major responsibilities were power search and maintenance for the bottom end for the NASCAR and Champ Car series including pistons, conrods and washers.
Like many before him, Ian started rallying in a MK2 Escort. Four events later - after being thrashed by Subaru’s - he decided to try a single make championship and entered the Ford KA Rally Championship in 1999. With a tiny budget and no sponsor Ian borrowed a car and entered the Granite City rally setting fastest stage times throughout the day. The touch paper was lit! The following year, with an almost full assault on the Championship Ian finished 4th overall setting many fastest stage times throughout the season and managing 2 outright wins, beating the very successful Guy Wilks. The following year saw more wins resulting in 2nd overall in the Championship which led to a funded drive in 2002 within the Ford Puma Rally Championship. That year Ian finished 2nd overall after a difficult, but enlightening year competing within the British Rally Championship.
In 2003 Ian left Cosworth and rallying to return home with his family to Scotland. This led to the creation of Mercury Motorsport Ltd - and an immediate promotion to Managing Director! Mercury Motorsport is a development of Mercury Motors / Mercury Classic Cars which was originally started by Ian's father in 1973.
Five years on, the Company has gone from strength to strength now employing twelve staff and has developed from offering just a handful of Classic and Modern vehicles for sale to a wide selection of vehicles together with the extremely successful Build to Order service.
